Top 5 Tips for Postpartum Recovery

1. Follow the 5-5-5 Rule

REST REST REST! A great rule of thumb for postpartum recovery is to follow the 5-5-5 rule for the first couple of weeks that you’re home with baby. This means 5 days in bed, 5 days on the bed and 5 days near the bed. This will ensure that you get the intentional rest that your body needs to get your postpartum recovery off to a great start.

2. Fuel Your Body

You just grew an entire person, how amazing are you?! This is the perfect time to remember that healing is both internal and external. Pick foods that nourish your body and, if you’re breastfeeding, encourage milk supply for baby. If breastfeeding, make sure to limit foods that may make baby gassy or cause discomfort like cabbage, beans and broccoli.

3. Acknowledge Your Emotions

Postpartum can be an intimidating time and that’s OK! Make sure that you’re holding space for yourself to process through your emotions. This could be chatting with a friend who recently gave birth or even Telehealth visits with a therapist while you’re in recovery.

4. Set Up a Recovery Station

You might need multiple stations depending on your home set up but be sure to stockpile your essentials and place them where they’re easily accessible. Everyone who gives birth will experiences some sort of vaginal bleeding ad soreness so make sure you’ve got the supplies you need to encourage your healing.

5. Hydrate and Get Your Fiber In

Chances are some vaginal and perineal soreness will make your first bowel movement a bit daunting, but it doesn’t have to be! Make sure you’re staying hydrated and getting enough fiber to make sure when the time comes, things will move as smoothly as possible. If you’re still concerned make sure to ask your doctor, midwife or nurse about stool softeners.
